About
Kenneth Alfred Ham, commonly known as Ken Ham, is an Australian-born Christian fundamentalist and prominent young Earth creationist. Born on October 20, 1951, in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, he developed an early interest in science and Christianity, which shaped his career as a science teacher and later as an advocate for biblical literalism. After earning his education credentials in Australia, he taught science in public schools for about 15 years while becoming involved in creationist ministries. In 1987, Ham co-founded Answers in Genesis (AiG), a Christian apologetics organization dedicated to promoting a literal interpretation of the Bible, particularly the Genesis account of creation. Under his leadership as founder, CEO, and former president, AiG has grown into a major influence in evangelical circles, operating the Creation Museum in Kentucky since 2007 and the Ark Encounter, a full-scale replica of Noah's Ark, which opened in 2016. These attractions serve as educational tools to counter evolutionary theory and affirm young Earth creationism, drawing millions of visitors and generating significant media attention. Ham moved to the United States in 1987 to expand AiG's reach, establishing its headquarters in Florence, Kentucky. He has authored numerous books, including 'The Lie: Evolution' and 'Answers in Genesis,' and is a frequent speaker at conferences, debates, and churches worldwide. His work emphasizes defending Christianity against secular science, often critiquing public education for teaching evolution. Ham's influence extends through media, including the AiG website, publications, and videos, reaching a global audience. He has been both praised by conservative Christians for upholding biblical authority and criticized by scientists and educators for promoting pseudoscience. Despite controversies, such as debates over the scientific validity of his claims and funding sources for AiG projects—including sponsorships from figures like Dan Wilks—Ham remains a key figure in the creationist movement, residing in the US and continuing to lead AiG's mission.
