About
Julie Naschauer was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, on March 5, 1866, into a prominent and wealthy Jewish family, the daughter of industrialist Max Naschauer. She married Theodor Herzl in 1889, and together they had three children: Paulina, Hans, and Margarethe (Trude). Their marriage was widely documented as a challenging one, marked by significant differences in temperament and outlook; Julie, described as elegant and socially inclined, reportedly found it difficult to reconcile with Herzl's consuming dedication to his Zionist vision and the demands it placed on their family life and finances. She was often critical of his political pursuits and struggled with periods of depression. After Herzl's death, she faced financial difficulties that created tension with the Zionist Organization.
