About
Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947, in Taylorville, Illinois) is an American financial executive and retired politician. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1969, served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves until 1975, and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1975. He joined Goldman Sachs that same year, rising to become Chairman and CEO, which solidified his reputation on Wall Street and amassed significant wealth, making him a prominent Democratic fundraiser with deep political and business networks.
Corzine entered politics in 2000, serving as U.S. Senator from New Jersey (2001-2006) and then as the 54th Governor of New Jersey (2006-2010). As governor, he focused on fiscal reforms, transportation funding, and stem cell research, but faced criticism over budget issues and a controversial toll increase plan. He lost re-election to Republican Chris Christie in 2009.
After leaving office, Corzine returned to finance as CEO of MF Global, a brokerage firm that collapsed in 2011 amid a massive trading scandal involving missing customer funds, leading to investigations, congressional hearings, and lawsuits. Though he testified before Congress, he was not criminally charged. His career exemplifies the intersection of Wall Street and Washington, with continued influence through fundraising and advisory roles.
