About
John Barger (1944–2011) was an American Catholic layman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who played a key role in post-Vatican II Catholic renewal efforts. He founded Sophia Institute Press in 1988, a nonprofit publishing organization based in Manchester, New Hampshire, dedicated to promoting traditional Catholic literature, theological texts, and spiritual writings in line with orthodox Catholic doctrine. Barger used his business background and personal philanthropy to fund and sustain the press, which grew to distribute over 200 titles emphasizing magisterial teachings and writings of saints and doctors of the Church. Throughout his life, he maintained a low public profile while focusing on behind-the-scenes leadership and philanthropy, leaving a lasting legacy in Catholic intellectual and spiritual renewal.
