About
Joe Solmonese is an American political strategist, activist, and nonprofit leader known for his work in LGBTQ+ advocacy and progressive causes. Born on January 1, 1965, in Attleboro, Massachusetts, he graduated from Boston University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in communications. He began his career in politics as an aide in the office of Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis and held top fundraising positions for political campaigns including Barney Frank's 1990 Congressional campaign and Les AuCoin's 1992 Senate campaign. From 2005 to 2012, he served as president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy organization in the United States, where he led efforts to advance equality and civil rights. After leaving HRC, he became CEO of Emily's List, a prominent organization supporting pro-choice Democratic women candidates, and partnered at Gavin/Solmonese, a consulting firm assisting corporate clients with public policy navigation. He also hosted 'The Agenda with Joe Solmonese' on XM Satellite Radio, focusing on political discussions. In recent years, he has taken on transitional leadership roles including as transition chair for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. In 2020, at age 54, he was appointed to lead the Democratic National Convention (DNC) planning in Milwaukee. Based in Washington, D.C., he continues to influence progressive networks through his expertise in advocacy, fundraising, and coalition-building.
