Abilio James 'Jim' Acosta, born April 17, 1971, in Fairfax, Virginia, is an American broadcast journalist and writer. He graduated cum laude from James Madison University with a bachelor's degree in mass communications and a minor in political science. Acosta began his career in radio at WMAL-AM in Washington, D.C., before transitioning to television in 1994 as a desk assistant at Fox affiliate WTTG-TV. He worked for CBS News and several affiliates prior to joining CNN in March 2007, where he initially covered the 2008 presidential campaigns. At CNN, Acosta served as chief White House correspondent during the Obama and first Trump administrations, gaining national attention for his clashes with President Donald Trump at press briefings. In January 2021, he was appointed anchor and chief domestic correspondent. On January 28, 2025, Acosta made his final broadcast on CNN after rejecting a different time slot for his CNN Newsroom show, ending his 18-year tenure with the network. He is known for his work on programs like House of Cards and authoring books, including a New York Times bestseller.
