About
Sir Jeremy Richard Streynsham Hunt is a prominent British Conservative politician known for his extensive roles in government and his background in business. Born on November 1, 1966, in Lambeth Hospital, Kennington, London, he was raised in the village of Shere, Surrey. Hunt studied at Oxford University, where he earned a first-class honours degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Following graduation, he worked as a management consultant at OC&C Strategy Consultants and later moved to Japan to teach English. Upon returning to the UK, he founded and ran his own educational publishing business, Hotcourses, which provided information on international study opportunities.
Hunt entered politics in 2005 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for South West Surrey (later redrawn as Godalming and Ash), a seat he has held since. His rise in the Conservative Party was rapid; he served as Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport from 2010 to 2012, overseeing preparations for the London Olympics. He then became Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from 2012 to 2018, a tenure marked by efforts to reform the NHS amid controversies over junior doctors' strikes. Hunt briefly served as Foreign Secretary from 2018 to 2019 under Theresa May and launched two unsuccessful bids for Conservative Party leadership. In 2022, he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by Rishi Sunak, serving until the 2024 general election defeat, after which he became Shadow Chancellor until November 2024.
Throughout his career, Hunt has been a key figure in the Conservative Party, advocating for free-market policies and international trade. His business acumen from Hotcourses informed his approach to education and health policy, though he faced criticism for his handling of media regulation during the News Corp bid for BSkyB in 2012 and NHS funding decisions. As of 2024, he remains an influential voice in British politics, particularly on economic and foreign affairs.
