Jeff Cohen is an American media critic, activist, and academic who founded Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) in 1986, a progressive media watchdog organization that monitors bias and censorship in U.S. mainstream media. He served as FAIR's executive director until 2004 and continues to contribute as a senior analyst. Cohen is an associate professor of journalism at the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, where he teaches media studies and ethics. His career includes work as a producer for the Phil Donahue Show in the 1980s, legal practice as a civil rights attorney after graduating from Harvard Law School, and authorship of books such as 'Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media' (2006). He has been a vocal advocate for media reform, challenging corporate influence in journalism, criticizing organizations like MEMRI for selective reporting, and addressing biases in coverage of issues like the Iraq War. Cohen contributes columns to outlets including The Nation and Extra!, appears on radio and TV programs, and remains active in discussions on digital media, misinformation, and independent journalism.
