Jamie Raskin (born Jamin Ben Raskin on December 13, 1962) is an American attorney, constitutional law professor, and progressive Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Maryland's 8th congressional district since 2017. Before entering Congress, he served in the Maryland State Senate from 2007 to 2016, where he was Senate Majority Whip and helped pass landmark legislation including marriage equality, abolition of the death penalty, the nation's first Benefit Corporation law, and adoption of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Raskin taught constitutional law at American University's Washington College of Law for over 25 years, co-founding the LL.M. program on law and government and the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project. He serves on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and the House Judiciary Committee, and was the lead impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. Born in Washington, D.C., to a Jewish family, he is the son of progressive activist Marcus Raskin, a former staff aide to President John F. Kennedy. Raskin earned degrees from Harvard University and Harvard Law School, represents an affluent suburban district northwest of Washington, D.C. (including much of Montgomery County and parts of Prince George's County), resides in Takoma Park, Maryland, and focuses on issues including healthcare, democracy, and civil rights.
