About
James Douglas Packer (born 8 September 1967) is an Australian billionaire businessman and investor, best known as the son of media mogul Kerry Packer and Roslyn Packer and the grandson of Sir Frank Packer. Born and raised in Sydney, he began his career as a trainee at his father's Newcastle Waters cattle station. Following his father's death in 2005, he inherited control of the family company, Consolidated Press Holdings Limited, and significant investments in Crown Resorts and other enterprises. Packer rose to become executive chairman of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) and later Consolidated Media Holdings, overseeing media interests across various platforms before divesting many of those assets, including the sale of the family's stake in the Nine Network and the split of PBL into Consolidated Media Holdings and Crown Resorts. He served as executive chairman of Crown Resorts, a major casino and entertainment company, until his resignation in 2018 amid regulatory scrutiny, personal challenges, and mental health issues. His business ventures have spanned casinos, media, early internet investments, and film production; notable examples include a $250 million loss on One.Tel, global ambitions with the creation of Melco Crown Entertainment alongside Lawrence Ho targeting the Macau market (impacted by a 2016 China crackdown leading to employee arrests), and producer credits on films such as The Revenant (2015), Winter's Tale (2014), and The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017). In 2022, he sold his controlling stake in Crown Resorts to Blackstone Group. Packer has been a central figure in controversies, including the Bergin Inquiry in New South Wales, which found Crown unfit for a casino license due to ties to organized crime and money laundering, prompting major governance restructuring; regulatory investigations into money laundering at Crown; and the 'Case 1000' corruption trial involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he and producer Arnon Milchan (as Milchan's associate) allegedly supplied the Netanyahus with luxury goods like champagne and cigars, with Packer reportedly viewing them as 'royalty' and purchasing adjacent property in Caesarea. He is also recognized for philanthropy through family foundations and has maintained a high profile in Australian business circles, with a career reflecting the Packer media dynasty's legacy—pivoting from traditional media to global gaming and casinos—marked by high-stakes decisions and public scandals. Personally, Packer has been married twice, first to Jodhi Meares and then to Erica Baxter, and was engaged to singer Mariah Carey in 2016 before a high-profile split. He has openly discussed struggles with depression and anxiety, which contributed to his withdrawal from corporate life, and currently maintains residences in Los Angeles, Aspen, and Mexico.
