About
Itamar Marcus (born August 29, 1953) is an Israeli researcher, media analyst, activist, and orientalist. He is best known as the founder and director of Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), an Israeli NGO established to monitor and analyze Palestinian Authority (PA) media, schoolbooks, and public discourse for content that promotes incitement, antisemitism, or rejection of Israel's existence. His work focuses on documenting how Palestinian education and media shape societal views, presenting findings to international audiences, policymakers, and media outlets to highlight perceived biases and calls for violence. His research has been cited in reports to the U.S. Congress and has influenced discussions on aid to the PA, emphasizing the need for reforms in Palestinian curricula and broadcasting.
In addition to his role at PMW, Marcus has served as vice president and spokesperson for the Central Fund of Israel, a U.S.-based nonprofit that channels donations to Israeli causes, including settlement activities and advocacy groups. This position positions him at the intersection of American philanthropy and Israeli advocacy, bridging U.S. funding with efforts often described as anti-Palestinian. Marcus is the son of the Central Fund's founders, which underscores his deep familial ties to these networks of influence.
Marcus's activism has drawn both praise from pro-Israel circles for exposing what he views as institutionalized hatred and criticism from Palestinian advocates who accuse PMW of selective reporting and bias against Palestinian narratives. His work remains a key resource in debates over Middle East peace processes, education reform, and international funding policies.
