About
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City (CCIQ) is a non-profit organization and mosque serving Quebec City's Muslim population, founded in 1985 at Université Laval. Its mission is to support the spiritual, social, and economic needs of the Muslim community through religious, educational, and social programs that foster integration and well-being. The organization operates as a community hub and its main place of worship is the Great Mosque of Quebec City, constructed and opened in 2014. The CCIQ promotes interfaith dialogue and community engagement, collaborating with local authorities, educational institutions, and faith groups. It gained international attention following the tragic 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting on January 29, 2017, when a gunman attacked worshippers during evening prayers, killing six and injuring nineteen—an incident classified as an anti-Muslim terrorist attack that highlighted Islamophobia in Canada. Since then, the CCIQ has emphasized resilience, education on multiculturalism, advocacy against hate crimes, and increased security, while continuing to provide resources for youth programs, women's initiatives, and cultural events. It remains a key institution and symbol of faith and community strength in Quebec.
