Isaac "Bougie" Herzog, born on September 22, 1960, in Tel Aviv, Israel, is an Israeli politician, lawyer, and advocate who has served as the 11th President of Israel since July 7, 2021. He is the son of Chaim Herzog, the sixth President of Israel, and Aura Ambache. Herzog began his career with military service in the Israel Defense Forces' intelligence unit from 1978 to 1983 and later entered politics through the Labor Party, serving as an advisor to leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. Elected to the Knesset in 2003, he held various ministerial roles including Minister of Housing and Construction (2005–2006), Minister of Welfare and Social Affairs (2007–2009), and Minister of Tourism (2009). From 2013 to 2018, he led the Labor Party and the Zionist Union alliance, serving as Leader of the Opposition and running as the party's candidate for Prime Minister in 2015, narrowly losing to Benjamin Netanyahu. Herzog also served as Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel from 2010 to 2018 and again from 2018 to 2021, focusing on global Jewish community engagement and immigration. Prior to his Knesset tenure, he was Secretary of the Economic-Social Council (1988–1990), Government Secretary (1999–2001), and Chairman of the Israel Anti-Drug Authority (2000–2003). As President, Herzog emphasizes national unity, international diplomacy, and the commemoration of Israel’s history, including leadership during the 2023 Hamas attacks. Known for his moderate political stance, efforts to bridge societal divides, and expertise in defense and foreign affairs, he is married to Michal Herzog, with whom he has three children.
