About
Ira Samuel Einhorn (1940-2020), known as 'The Unicorn Killer,' rose to prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s Philadelphia counterculture scene as a charismatic self-proclaimed guru, blending environmentalism, anti-war activism, and New Age spirituality. An environmental activist, he organized 'Be-In' gatherings modeled after San Francisco's Human Be-In, hosted notable figures like Abbie Hoffman, and delivered a speech at the inaugural Earth Day event in Philadelphia on 1970-04-22. Einhorn positioned himself as a connector between the hippie movement and establishment figures, consulting for businesses on 'corporate consciousness-raising' and mingling with politicians and celebrities. On 1977-09-09, his former girlfriend, Holly Maddux, vanished after visiting their shared apartment in Philadelphia to retrieve belongings. In March 1979, police discovered her mummified remains in a steamer trunk in a bedroom closet of Einhorn's apartment, along with her belongings and signs of blunt force trauma. Einhorn claimed she had gone to the Himalayas for spiritual enlightenment and suggested involvement by the CIA or other conspirators. He was charged with murder but released on bail; days before his 1981 trial, he fled to Europe, becoming a fugitive for nearly 23 years. Arrested in France in 1997, extradition took four years due to his refusal without assurances against the death penalty. Tried again in 2002 and initially represented by future U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. A convicted murderer, Einhorn maintained his innocence, alleging a frame-up by intelligence agencies, and authored books from prison promoting conspiracy theories. He died of natural causes on 2020-04-03 at Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution in Houtzdale, aged 79. His case drew widespread media attention, inspiring books, documentaries, and a 1999 TV movie, and he was criticized for exploiting the counterculture movement and for his manipulative relationships, including allegations of prior violence against partners.
