Gideon Rose, born in 1964, is an American foreign policy expert and journalist known for his long tenure at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He served as editor of Foreign Affairs, CFR's prestigious journal, from 2010 to 2021, following roles as managing editor (2000-2006) and associate editor (1997-2000). During the Clinton administration, he was associate director for Near East and South Asian Affairs on the National Security Council staff from 1994 to 1995. Rose has contributed to shaping U.S. foreign policy discourse through his editorial work and writings, including books such as 'How Wars End: Why Wars Don't Always End When the Fighting Stops' (2010). He earned his B.A. in history from Brown University in 1986 and a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University in 1995. He has been a Mary and David Boies Distinguished Fellow at CFR, continuing his influence in international affairs analysis.
