About
George Stephanopoulos is an American television host, political commentator, and former Democratic advisor. Born on February 10, 1961, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Greek immigrant parents, he grew up in a family with strong ties to the Greek Orthodox Church; his father, Robert George Stephanopoulos, was a Greek Orthodox priest. He began his career in politics as a congressional aide in the early 1980s, working for Congressman Ed Feighan and later as a floor whip for House Speaker Jim Wright. He rose to prominence during the 1992 presidential campaign as a senior advisor to Bill Clinton and served as White House communications director under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1996, playing a key role in managing the administration's messaging during controversies like the Whitewater scandal and the Lewinsky affair.
After leaving the White House, Stephanopoulos transitioned to journalism, joining ABC News in 1997. He initially served as a political analyst and correspondent before becoming the anchor of the Sunday morning public affairs show 'This Week' in 2002, a role he continues to hold. In 2009, he was named co-anchor of 'Good Morning America' (GMA), which under his stewardship became the top-rated morning news program, surpassing NBC's 'Today' show. Stephanopoulos has conducted high-profile interviews with world leaders and politicians, including Nikki Haley, and has authored the bestselling book 'All Too Human: A Political Education' in 1999, detailing his White House experiences. He is married to actress Ali Wentworth since 2001, and they have two daughters.
Throughout his career, Stephanopoulos has been recognized for his journalistic integrity and has received multiple Emmy Awards. However, he has faced criticism for his close ties to the Clinton administration, with some accusing him of bias in his reporting on Democratic figures. In 2024, he was involved in a controversy when ABC News settled a defamation lawsuit with Donald Trump for $15 million over statements made on air regarding Epstein files, though Stephanopoulos was not personally sued.
