About
Sir Evelyn Robert Adrian de Rothschild (1931-2022) was a British financier and leading figure in the Rothschild banking dynasty. Born in London to Anthony Gustav de Rothschild, a senior partner at N M Rothschild & Sons, and Yvonne Cahen d'Anvers from a prominent French banking family, he spent his childhood between a Mayfair house and the family estate at Ascott, Buckinghamshire. After attending Harrow School from 1943 and studying history at Trinity College, Cambridge—without completing a degree—he performed National Service in the Royal Navy, spent time in America, and joined the family business at age 26 in 1957 following his father's retirement due to illness. He served as chairman of N M Rothschild & Sons from 1974 to 2003, overseeing the bank's modernization and its 1990 merger with Smith New Court to form a major market maker. Knighted in 1989, he co-founded E.L. Rothschild LLC in 2003 with his third wife, Lynn Forester de Rothschild, focusing investments on media, asset management, real estate, and other sectors with operations in the US and Europe. A noted art collector, philanthropist, and breeder of champion racehorses, he supported various causes including the arts. In late 2023, multiple sources alleged abusive behavior toward female colleagues during his banking career, as reported by The Guardian. He passed away on November 7, 2022, at age 91.
