About
Emily Maitlis is a prominent British journalist and broadcaster, born on September 6, 1970, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to British parents. She was raised primarily in Sheffield, England, after her family relocated to the United Kingdom when she was young. Maitlis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Queens' College, University of Cambridge in 1992. Her career began in financial journalism at Reuters in London, followed by roles at the BBC, where she reported from various international locations. She joined BBC Newsnight in 2006, becoming its lead presenter in 2018, a position she held until leaving the BBC at the end of 2021 amid reported tensions over editorial independence. Maitlis gained international recognition for her incisive interviewing style, notably conducting the 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew regarding his association with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual misconduct linked to Virginia Giuffre, whom she also interviewed separately. This interview contributed to Prince Andrew's decision to step back from public duties. In 2022, Maitlis co-founded The News Agents podcast with Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall. She has been praised for her rigorous journalism but has faced criticism, including a 2020 BBC reprimand for an opening monologue on Dominic Cummings' lockdown breaches. Maitlis is married to Edward Etkind, a financial consultant, and they have two children; she resides in London. Throughout her career, she has been involved in documenting networks of influence, particularly in political and royal scandals, emphasizing accountability.
