About
Edgar John Uihlein Jr. (1916-2005) was an American businessman, naval aviator, and co-founder of General Binding Corporation (GBC). Born into the affluent Uihlein family, descendants of the founders of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, he inherited substantial wealth from the family's brewing empire. His father, Edgar Uihlein Sr., served as a vice president at Schlitz. Uihlein grew up in Chicago and served as a United States Naval Aviator during World War II. In 1941, alongside his brother Robert Uihlein Sr., he co-founded GBC, which specialized in laminating and binding technologies and became a global leader in office equipment manufacturing before being acquired by ACCO Brands in 1999. Beyond business, Uihlein was involved in philanthropy, supporting educational and cultural institutions in the Midwest. He passed away in 2005, leaving a legacy tied to both brewing heritage and innovations in office technology.
