Edgar S. Woolard Jr., commonly known as Ed Woolard, was an influential American businessman who served as Chairman and CEO of DuPont from 1989 to 1995 (with his CEO tenure spanning 1991-1995). He pioneered corporate sustainability initiatives at DuPont, streamlining operations and reducing environmental impact while increasing the company's stock value by 160%. After retiring from DuPont, he served on numerous corporate boards including Apple (1996-2000), where he played a pivotal role in facilitating Steve Jobs' return, as well as IBM, Citigroup, the New York Stock Exchange, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Born April 15, 1934, in Washington, North Carolina, he graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS in industrial engineering in 1956, served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Armed Forces, and married Peggy Harrell, with whom he had two daughters. A dedicated philanthropist, he contributed over $1 million to scholarships at NC State and endowed a chair at the University of Delaware. An avid tennis enthusiast, he supported the International Tennis Hall of Fame and advocated for gender equity in sports. He passed away on December 4, 2023, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, at age 89, leaving a legacy of leadership, innovation, and corporate responsibility.
