About
Deborah Esther Lipstadt (born March 18, 1947, in New York City) is an acclaimed American historian, author, and diplomat specializing in modern Jewish history, the Holocaust, and antisemitism. She earned her PhD from Brandeis University in 1975 and has held academic positions at the University of Washington, UCLA, and Emory University, where she serves as the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies. Lipstadt gained international prominence through her scholarly works, including 'Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory' (1993), 'History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier' (2005), 'The Eichmann Trial' (2011), and 'Antisemitism: Here and Now' (2019). Her expertise led to her appointment by President Joe Biden as the United States Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism in 2022, a role she held until 2025. Lipstadt is widely recognized for her successful defense in a 2000 UK libel trial against Holocaust denier David Irving, which affirmed the historical reality of the Holocaust. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal advocate for historical accuracy, Holocaust education, and combating antisemitism, contributing to institutions like the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and engaging in public discourse on contemporary antisemitic manifestations.
