David John Urban (born March 6, 1964, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania) is the son of a union steelworker and a native of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, who currently resides in Washington, D.C. He is a lobbyist, CNN commentator, and senior adviser to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Urban graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a B.S. in 1986, earned an M.P.A. or M.A. in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, and received a J.D. from Temple University School of Law. He served as an artillery officer in the 101st Airborne Division from 1986 to 1991, attaining the rank of Captain, participating in Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War, and earning the Bronze Star Medal. His career includes private practice as an attorney at Ballard Spahr (1994–1997) focusing on public finance; Chief of Staff and senior advisor to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) (1997–2002), handling policy, legislative strategy, political affairs, media, and administration; President of American Continental Group; Executive Vice President for North American Corporate Affairs at ByteDance (TikTok's parent company); Managing Director at BGR Group (joined April 2022) focusing on defense, critical technologies, and advisory services; Of Counsel at Torridon Law (joined June 2024); adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College; and co-owner of PoliticsPA (since 2007). He serves on boards including Virtu Financial (since 2018), SAIC (joined 2025), Eos Energy Enterprises (joined 2024), SubCom, Edward M. Kennedy Institute, Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, and International Republican Institute. Urban is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar, admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, U.S. District Court for Eastern PA, Third Circuit, and U.S. Supreme Court. In political activity, he was appointed by President Trump as Chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission (2018–2021) and to the Board of Visitors for West Point (2019), and has been recognized as a top lobbyist by The Hill (2015–2019) and as influential in Republican politics, particularly in Pennsylvania. He has been featured in Politico's '30 most powerful people in Trump's Washington' (2016) and Washingtonian Magazine's 500 Most Influential (2025), among other recognitions.
