About
The David Horowitz Freedom Center (DHFC) is a nonprofit conservative think tank and advocacy organization founded in 1988 by political activist David Horowitz and Peter Collier. Originally established as the Center for the Study of Popular Culture (CSPC) to analyze popular culture from a leftist perspective, it rebranded in 2006 to focus on combating what it perceives as threats to free societies, including leftist ideologies and indoctrination, radical Islamism and Islamic extremism, terrorism, and antisemitism, while promoting conservative viewpoints. The organization engages in what it describes as 'political warfare' against the left through media, research, advocacy, and campus activism. It supports anti-Islamist activism and pro-Israel initiatives, promotes campus conservatism, and funds conservative causes via campus watch programs, publications such as FrontPage Magazine and Jihad Watch, conferences like Restoration Weekend, fellowships, media production, and other advocacy projects. The DHFC publishes critical works on radical ideologies and has received annual funding in the millions from conservative foundations including the John M. Olin Foundation, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, and the Scaife Family Foundations. While it maintains a mission dedicated to defending Western values and countering perceived radical threats, the organization has faced criticism from groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center for allegedly promoting Islamophobia, misinformation, and fostering division and hate speech.
