Darrell Edward Issa, born November 1, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio, is an American businessman and politician. The grandson of immigrants and recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Issa served in the U.S. Army, commissioned as an officer and attaining the rank of captain before completing active duty in 1980. He then entered the private sector, becoming CEO of California-based Directed Electronics, and received awards including the Entrepreneur of the Year from Inc. Magazine, Ernst & Young, and The San Diego Union-Tribune.
A member of the Republican Party, Issa has had a long career in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served from 2001 to 2019, representing California's 48th district initially and then the 49th district for eight terms, primarily covering North County in the San Diego area. From January 2011 to January 2015, he chaired the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. After a brief hiatus, he returned to Congress, representing the 50th district from 2021 to 2023 and currently serving California's 48th congressional district.
Issa is known for his roles in oversight and investigations during his chairmanship, blending his business background with legislative service focused on government reform.
