Daniel Kurtz-Phelan is an American journalist and foreign policy expert who has served as the editor of Foreign Affairs, the Council on Foreign Relations' bimonthly magazine on international relations and U.S. foreign policy, since September 2021. Prior to becoming editor, he was the managing editor from 2017 to 2021 and deputy managing editor from 2013 to 2017. He joined the Council on Foreign Relations in 2010 as an editorial associate and has held various roles there, including as the magazine's China correspondent. Kurtz-Phelan is the author of the book 'The China Mission: George Marshall's Unfinished War, 1945-1947' (2018), which details General George C. Marshall's post-World War II efforts to broker peace in China. His writing has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Politico. He earned a B.A. in history from Williams College.
