Daniel Atar (also known as Danny or Dani Atar) is an Israeli politician, environmental activist, and executive. Born on January 5, 1958, in Afula, Israel, to Jewish parents who immigrated from Morocco in 1956, he grew up in northern Israel. He served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the elite Golani Brigade and participated in the 1982 Lebanon War. His early career involved local governance as head of the Gilboa Regional Council. He was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Zionist Union alliance (including the Labor Party) from 2015 to 2016 during the 20th Knesset, serving on committees related to environmental and agricultural issues. Following his political tenure, he transitioned to leadership roles in environmental and Zionist organizations, currently serving as Chairman and CEO of the Jewish National Fund (JNF), known in Israel as Keren Kayemet LeIsrael (KKL), a key subsidiary of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). In this role, he focuses on afforestation, land preservation, forest fire prevention, sustainable development, and strengthening Jewish ties to the land, while advocating for international cooperation on environmental matters.
