About
Cleta B. Deatherage Mitchell (born September 16, 1950) is an American lawyer, former politician, and prominent conservative election law attorney and activist. She earned both her bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Oklahoma and began her legal career practicing litigation and administrative law in Norman, Oklahoma. Entering politics as a Democrat, Mitchell was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1976, representing District 44, and served until 1984, where she was known as a firebrand progressive legislator. She switched her political affiliation to the Republican Party in 1996 and subsequently built a career as a conservative attorney specializing in election law, campaign finance, and public policy, representing groups on voting rights and political finance issues. Mitchell serves on the boards of several right-wing organizations, including the Conservative Partnership Institute and the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. She is a key figure in Republican efforts to challenge voting rights and promote election integrity, often asserting without evidence that Democratic victories result from cheating. Her involvement in post-2020 election denialism has elevated her status within conservative circles.
