About
Christ Church Episcopal School (CCES) is a private, co-educational, K-12 college-preparatory school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, located in Greenville, South Carolina. Founded in 1959 by the Rector and Vestry of Christ Church in Greenville, the school began modestly in three frame houses on East Washington Street, initially serving kindergarten through sixth grade. Over the decades, it has grown into a prominent independent institution emphasizing Christian education, character development, and academic excellence, guided by its motto: 'Character. Community. Excellence. Service.' The school's Episcopal identity integrates faith with intellectual rigor, welcoming students of all backgrounds while fostering values of kindness, service, and spiritual formation. More than 4,000 students have attended since its inception, with a published history book, 'The First Fifty Years of Christ Church Episcopal School: A Journey to Remember,' documenting its evolution, leaders, programs, and alumni anecdotes.
Today, CCES operates on a 72-acre campus at 245 Cavalier Drive in southeast Greenville, serving approximately 1,203 students (as of 2022-23) with 129 full-time faculty members, maintaining a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio. The curriculum spans pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, with strong emphases on academics, athletics (competing in SCHSL 3A as the Cavaliers in blue and white), and extracurriculars, including the student newspaper 'The Cavalier' and yearbook 'The Hellenian.' Under Head of School David Padilla, the institution continues to expand, breaking ground in November 2025 on the 'Build for the Future' program—a $150 million campus development initiative, with phase one involving a $30-56 million TIDE building and other facilities to enhance learning spaces. The school actively engages in community service, such as the South Carolina Youth in Government Conference, and celebrates student achievements, like senior athlete Jude Hall's commitment to the University of Arkansas football team.
Notable alumni include former U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, highlighting the school's influence in producing leaders. CCES has faced occasional controversies, such as in a recent high school football game against Riverside where a PA announcer was removed for making a disrespectful comment about South Carolina State University, prompting a swift response from school officials. These incidents underscore the institution's commitment to upholding its values amid public scrutiny, while its ongoing growth and traditions position it as a key player in Greenville's educational landscape.
