About
Christopher Thomas Sununu (born November 5, 1974) is an American politician and engineer who served as the 82nd Governor of New Hampshire from 2017 to 2025. A moderate Republican known for his pragmatic governance and national party influence, Sununu is the son of former New Hampshire Governor and White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu and younger brother of former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu, placing him within a prominent New England political family. Before entering politics, he worked for a decade cleaning up hazardous waste sites across the United States and served as CEO of Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire. His political career began with election to the New Hampshire Executive Council in 2010, where he served three terms until 2017, overseeing state contracts and land deals. He was first elected governor in 2016, defeating Democratic nominee Colin Van Ostern, and won re-election in 2018 and 2022 with significant margins. During his tenure, Sununu focused on economic development, environmental protection, and fiscal conservatism, notably leading New Hampshire's balanced COVID-19 pandemic response with mask mandates and economic reopenings. He gained national attention for criticizing former President Donald Trump and supporting moderate Republican policies, positioning him as a potential national political figure, though he opted not to run for president in 2024. Sununu graduated from MIT with a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering, grew up in Salem, New Hampshire, and maintains strong state connections. As of 2025, he continues to influence Republican politics through advocacy for pragmatic conservatism and national party discussions.
