Condoleezza Rice
board_member
Condoleezza Rice served on the board of directors of Chevron Corporation from 1991 to January 15, 2001, when she resigned to become National Security Advisor. She was recommended for the board by George Shultz, who was also a Chevron board member. During her decade on the board, Chevron named a 129,000-ton supertanker the 'SS Condoleezza Rice' in 1993 — one of several tankers named after board members. When Rice joined the Bush White House, public watchdog groups highlighted the tanker as evidence of the Bush administration's close ties to the energy industry. Chevron quietly renamed the tanker 'Altair Voyager' in April 2001. Rice's Chevron tenure coincided with the company's extensive operations in Central Asia, including the Tengiz oil field in Kazakhstan, during a period when U.S. policy toward the Caspian region was being shaped.
