About
Celia Adelson (née Granat) was a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant and homemaker, best known as the mother of casino magnate and philanthropist Sheldon Adelson. Born in 1894 in what is now Ukraine, she immigrated to the United States with her family during her early years, settling in the Boston area where she raised her children. Celia worked various low-wage jobs, including as a knitter and in a candy factory, to support her family during the Great Depression, but primarily served as a homemaker. Her Jewish heritage and immigrant background shaped her family's values, emphasizing hard work and community. She married Arthur Adelson, a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant and taxi driver, and together they had four children, including Sheldon, born in 1933 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The family faced financial hardships, living in a cramped tenement, which influenced Sheldon's entrepreneurial drive. Celia was described by her son as a strong, resilient woman who instilled resilience in her children. She later moved to the Chicago area with parts of the family and passed away in 1984 at the age of 90 in Skokie, Illinois. While not publicly prominent herself, her life exemplified the immigrant experience central to her son's success story.
