About
C.C. Wei, also known as Wei Zhejia, is a prominent Taiwanese business executive and engineer who serves as the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker and a key supplier to companies like Apple Inc. He succeeded TSMC founder Morris Chang as CEO in June 2018 and was appointed chairman in 2019. Under Wei's leadership, TSMC has expanded its global footprint, invested heavily in advanced semiconductor technologies such as 3nm and 2nm processes, and navigated challenges including U.S.-China trade tensions and supply chain disruptions. His strategic decisions have solidified TSMC's position as a cornerstone of the global technology supply chain, with the company producing over 50% of the world's semiconductors.
Wei began his career in the semiconductor industry after completing his education in electrical engineering. He joined TSMC in 1998 and rose through the ranks, holding positions such as director of the Fab-14 module, vice president of R&D, and senior vice president of business development. Prior to TSMC, he worked at Texas Instruments in the United States. Wei is credited with advancing TSMC's research and development efforts, particularly in process technology and manufacturing efficiency, contributing to the company's innovation in chip fabrication.
Born and raised in Taiwan, Wei maintains a low public profile, focusing primarily on his professional responsibilities. He has been involved in discussions on Taiwan's semiconductor dominance and its implications for global geopolitics. As of 2023, TSMC under Wei's guidance continues to face scrutiny over dependencies on Taiwanese manufacturing amid international calls for diversification.
