About
Burisma Holdings Limited was a Ukrainian natural gas company founded in 2002 and registered in Limassol, Cyprus, serving as a prominent holding company in the energy sector primarily focused on natural gas exploration and production in Ukraine. It was owned by Ukrainian oligarch Mykola Zlochevsky through his Cyprus-based firm Brociti Investments Limited, which acquired full control in 2011 following the death of co-owner Mykola Lisin. The company expanded through consolidations in 2006-2007 and investments in entities like Sunrise Energy Resources, growing to become one of Ukraine's largest private natural gas producers by around 2019. Its operations were centered in Kyiv, Ukraine, and it engaged in partnerships including a 2014 Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine's Methane Emission Reduction Program (MERP). Burisma faced significant international scrutiny due to board appointments, notably Hunter Biden (son of then-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden) who served from 2014 to 2019, drawing allegations of influence peddling and corruption investigated by U.S. Senate committees in 2020. The company was embroiled in multiple controversies including Russian hacking attempts in 2019, Ukrainian investigations into Zlochevsky's dealings during his tenure as Minister of Natural Resources (2010-2012), and Russian disinformation campaigns. Burisma Holdings was dissolved in 2023, marking the end of its operations amid ongoing geopolitical and legal challenges.
