About
Brian Patrick Stelter is an American journalist and media analyst known for his extensive coverage of the media industry. Born on September 3, 1985, in Bethesda, Maryland, he grew up in Towson, Maryland, and developed an early interest in television news. Stelter graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2007 with a degree in journalism. He began his career as the editor of TVNewser, a blog covering the television industry, from 2007 to 2010. He then joined The New York Times as a media reporter from 2010 to 2013, covering major stories in the media landscape. In 2013, Stelter moved to CNN as the chief media correspondent and hosted the weekly program Reliable Sources, which focused on media ethics, bias, and accountability. The show gave him a platform to critique conservative media figures and outlets, earning both praise and criticism. His tenure at CNN ended in August 2022 when Reliable Sources was canceled amid low ratings and broader network changes under new leadership. Following his departure, he authored the books Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV (2013) and Network of Lies: The Murdochs and the Corruption of American Journalism (2024). In 2023, Stelter joined The Hollywood Reporter as a contributing editor, and in 2024, he returned to CNN as a media analyst. He is known for his detailed reporting on media conglomerates and political influence in journalism and has faced controversies, including accusations of liberal bias from conservative critics. Stelter is married with two children and maintains a relatively private family life while continuing to influence media discourse through writing and analysis.
