About
Brackett B. Denniston III is a distinguished legal professional with a comprehensive career spanning public service, private practice, and corporate leadership. He earned an A.B. summa cum laude with high honors in political science from Kenyon College in 1969 and a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1973, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review and member of the Board of Student Advisors. His early career included clerking for the Honorable Herbert Y.C. Choy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (1973-1974), practicing as an associate and partner at Goodwin Procter in Boston (1974-1982 and 1986-1993), leading the Major Frauds Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston (1982-1986) with over 200 successful white-collar crime prosecutions and receiving the Department of Justice Director’s Award, and serving as Chief Legal Counsel to Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld and Lt. Governor A. Paul Cellucci (1993-1996). At General Electric, he began as Vice President and Senior Counsel for Litigation and Legal Policy (1996-2004), overseeing worldwide litigation, compliance, and investigations while chairing the Compliance Review Board, before ascending to Senior Vice President and General Counsel (2005-2016). In this role, he managed a global legal organization of over 3,000 professionals in legal operations, government affairs, compliance, and environmental health & safety; served as Secretary to the Board; chaired the GE Compliance Review Board; acted as executive champion of the GE LGBT Alliance; and sat on the boards of the GE Foundation and GE Capital. Under his leadership, GE's legal department was voted the best by In Compliance and Corporate Counsel, and Denniston was named America's Outstanding General Counsel and one of the Most Influential by the National Law Journal. Since 2016, he has served as Senior Counsel at Goodwin Procter LLP, advising on corporate governance, crisis management, complex litigation, investigations, and regulatory issues. He currently chairs the Pioneer Public Interest Law Center and the Board of Trustees at Kenyon College (2015-present; trustee since 2000 with a gap 2004-2005), as well as the Institute of Law Reform at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (2016-present). Additional affiliations include board memberships at the Pioneer Institute (2018-present), Equal Justice Works (2016-present; Chair of Nominations/Government Committee), and Coalition for Integrity (2016-present); service on the Advisory Board to the Dean of Harvard Law School (2006-present); and membership in the American Law Institute. Awards include the Champion Award from the Pro Bono Institute, Scales of Justice from Equal Justice Works, CPR Corporate Leadership Award, and Good Apple from Appleseed. Personally, he is married to Kathleen Denniston, has three children, and previously chaired the Duxbury, MA Zoning Board of Appeals. He enjoys hiking, biking, skiing, swimming, and emphasizes work-life balance.
