About
Binyomin Spira, also known as Benjamin Spira, is a Brooklyn-based businessman and bakery operator. He was a co-defendant and figure of interest in the 2009 federal corruption and money laundering investigation known as Operation Bid Rig, charged with operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Spira was a close associate of Rabbi Mordchai Fish of Congregation Sheves Achim in Brooklyn and a co-conspirator in the scheme, acting as the physical intermediary for cash drop-offs directed by Rabbi Fish. He operated the Schreibers Bakery in Borough Park, which federal investigators identified as a primary physical location for clandestine cash hand-offs and functioned as a cash house for the Bid Rig money laundering network. During the investigation, Spira was documented facilitating the exchange of bank checks for large quantities of cash provided by a cooperating witness, Solomon Dwek, operating the money transmitting business that provided cash in exchange for checks made to BGC and supplied cash for transactions. The network utilized religious charitable organizations, or gemachs, to launder millions of dollars. Spira pleaded guilty in 2011 to one count of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business and was subsequently sentenced to federal prison.
