About
Billi Marcus is an American philanthropist and the wife of Bernard 'Bernie' Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot. Prior to their marriage, she worked as a retailer, enduring long hours to support her only son, which fostered a deep understanding of Bernie's demanding 12-14 hour workdays. She became a steadfast supporter during the company's growth, excelling in public relations and contributing to its promotion as a natural partner. In 1986, Billi and Bernie established the Billi and Bernie Marcus Foundation in Georgia as a supporting organization of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, focusing on Jewish causes, education, and healthcare initiatives. They later founded the Billi Marcus Foundation in 1998. The couple's philanthropy includes a major donation credited with enabling the creation of the Georgia Aquarium and a $25 million gift in support of the world's first underground blood processing, testing, storage, and distribution facility. Billi is actively involved in these efforts, reflecting her commitment to community and humanitarian causes. She has a profound affinity for animals, possibly influenced by a career related to veterinary work or animal care, and has expressed particular fondness for beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium, including visiting relocated ones in Texas. She enjoys traveling while prioritizing comfort foods and animal-related interests.
