About
The Biden Foundation was a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. It was established in 2016, received IRS approval, and was officially launched on February 1, 2017. Incorporated in Delaware with tax ID 81-1329470, the foundation focused on policy, legacy issues, and championing progress and prosperity for American families. Its mission emphasized dignity, equality, and opportunity through educational programming and policy analysis, addressing critical national issues at a pivotal time and advocating for policies that advance opportunities for all people regardless of income, race, gender, age, or sexuality. Key program areas included the cancer initiative, supporting equality for all, ensuring the full realization of the Violence Against Women Act, aiding members of the military and their families, and increasing access to high-quality affordable education. The foundation was governed by a volunteer board of directors, with former U.S. Senator Ted Kaufman as Board Chair, Hon. Mark Gitenstein as President, and Valerie Biden Owens as Vice Chair. Other board members included Mark Angelson, Jeffrey Peck, Micaela Fernandez Allen, Nicole Isaac, and Darla Pomeroy. It was led by Executive Director Louisa Terrell and funded through donations. The foundation suspended operations on April 25, 2019, ceasing activities after publicly announcing the decision and expressing pride in its efforts to promote core values. It is distinct from the Beau Biden Foundation, which focuses on child protection, and later initiatives like the Biden Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
