About
Bernardo 'Bernie' Moreno is a Colombian-born American businessman and politician serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. Born on February 14, 1967, in Bogotá, Colombia, his family immigrated to the United States in 1972 when he was five years old, fleeing economic and political instability; they settled in Miami, Florida, where he attended Christopher Columbus High School. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1989. Moreno built a career in finance before entering the automotive industry, founding the Bernie Moreno Companies in 1997, which grew into one of the largest luxury car dealership groups in Ohio, with locations in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. He previously served as president of the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association. Moreno entered politics as a Republican, receiving an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. He ran unsuccessfully for the Columbus City Council in 2019 but won the 2024 Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Ohio, defeating state Sen. Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose. In the general election on November 5, 2024, he defeated three-term incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown. Moreno is noted for his conservative positions on immigration, economy, and opposition to abortion. He is married to Bridget Moreno, with three children, and is fluent in Spanish.
