About
The Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People is an Israeli constitutional law passed by the Knesset on 19 July 2018 with 62 votes in favor, 55 against, and two abstentions. It affirms Israel's status as the nation-state of the Jewish people, specifying the country's significance to them and outlining roles and responsibilities by which Israel is bound to fulfill this purpose. Largely symbolic and declarative in nature, the law has been highly controversial, sparking debates over minority rights, particularly for Arab Israelis, and drawing international criticism for being characterized as racist, undemocratic, and a manifestation of apartheid. Groups in the Jewish diaspora expressed concerns that it violates Israel's self-defined status as a 'Jewish and democratic state' by prioritizing an exclusively Jewish identity. The European Union stated it complicated the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, while the Arab League, Palestine Liberation Organization, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and Muslim World League condemned it.
