About
Barrett Lancaster Brown (born August 14, 1981) is an American anarchist, hacktivist, writer, and journalist best known for his association with the hacktivist collective Anonymous during the early 2010s, particularly his involvement in the Stratfor email leak, and for his advocacy of WikiLeaks. Born into a wealthy family in Dallas, Texas, Brown grew up in opposition to his privileged background and pursued activism, journalism, and online investigations. He founded Project PM, a crowd-sourced effort examining the cyber-industrial complex, and his column at The Intercept earned the 2016 National Magazine Award for columns and commentary. His work has appeared in outlets including The Guardian, Vanity Fair, and Huffington Post. Brown faced significant legal challenges related to his research on government intelligence contractors, with charges that carried potential sentences exceeding 100 years in prison. Advocacy efforts, including the website freebarrettbrown.org, supported his defense. He has been interviewed by journalists such as Andy Greenberg.
