About
Abraham Moshe 'Avi' Dichter (born December 14, 1952) is a prominent Israeli politician and former intelligence official with a distinguished career in national security. He served as director of Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service, from 2000 to 2005, playing a key role in counterterrorism efforts during the Second Intifada. His tenure was marked by controversial operations including targeted assassinations, drawing both praise for enhancing security and criticism for human rights concerns. Prior to leading Shin Bet, he had a long career in the organization, rising through the ranks after enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces and joining the security service in 1971.
Transitioning to politics, Dichter was elected to the Knesset in 2006 as a member of the Kadima party. He held ministerial positions including Minister of Internal Security (2009-2011) and briefly as Minister of Home Front Defense (2012-2013). In 2013, he joined the Likud party and was re-elected to the Knesset, continuing his focus on security and agriculture policies. He served as Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee around 2020-2022. As of recent years, Dichter serves as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, leveraging his expertise in crisis management for rural and food security issues. He has been involved in briefing intelligence units like Unit 8200 on security matters.
Dichter's career reflects a blend of military, intelligence, and political influence in Israel, often at the center of debates on security versus civil liberties. He has faced allegations related to Shin Bet operations, including the 1996 assassination of Yahya Ayyash, though no formal charges were brought against him. His political shifts and long tenure underscore his role in Israel's networks of influence within government and defense sectors.
