About
Asmaa Abdol-Hamid, born on November 22, 1981, in the United Arab Emirates to a Palestinian father and an Emirati mother, immigrated to Denmark at age six and grew up in the Vollsmose neighborhood of Odense. She became a Danish citizen and earned a degree in social pedagogy. A member of the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten), she was elected to the Folketing (Danish Parliament) in 2007 at age 25, becoming one of the youngest MPs and the first to wear a hijab, but declined to take her seat due to religious conflicts with the parliamentary oath. Throughout her political career, she focused on integration, immigrant rights, and combating discrimination against Muslims, while criticizing anti-Muslim extremism. Beyond politics, she has been an activist and media personality, advocating for women's rights within Muslim communities and challenging stereotypes about veiled women. In 2012, she gained attention for appearing topless on the TV show 'Blachman' to provoke discussions on body image and cultural perceptions. She has defended free speech in cases like the 2005 Muhammad cartoons controversy, while condemning Islamophobia. Abdol-Hamid has faced allegations of sympathizing with radical Islamists due to past associations, but has distanced herself from such views. Today, she works as a social worker in Odense, continuing advocacy through writing, public speaking, and community work, promoting dialogue between Muslim and non-Muslim communities and criticizing both far-right anti-immigrant sentiments and conservative elements within Muslim societies. Her career reflects a complex navigation of identity, faith, and politics in multicultural Denmark.
