About
Armand Deutsch (1913-2005) was the grandson of Julius Rosenwald, the prominent philanthropist and longtime president of Sears, Roebuck & Co., and cousin of Nina Rosenwald. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he grew up in an affluent family and attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. In a notorious incident on May 21, 1924, thrill killers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, fellow students at the school, had originally intended Deutsch as their kidnapping and murder victim for a supposed 'perfect crime' but ultimately selected and killed his schoolmate Robert 'Bobby' Franks instead, a case that shocked the nation and led to one of the first 'trial of the century' spectacles. Later in life, Deutsch established himself as a Hollywood film producer, working on several projects during the 1950s. His career bridged his Midwestern roots with the glamour of the film industry. Deutsch maintained connections within the extended Rosenwald family, which was known for its extensive philanthropy, particularly in Jewish causes and civil rights. He passed away on August 13, 2005, at the age of 92.
