About
Andrew (Andy) Kim, born July 12, 1982, is an American politician and former diplomat serving as the junior United States Senator from New Jersey since 2024. A progressive member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented New Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2024. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Korean immigrant parents, Kim was raised in South Orange, New Jersey, where he attended public schools. He is a husband and father to two sons, and his family story emphasizes his roots as the product of immigrant parents and public education in New Jersey.
Kim's academic background includes attending Deep Springs College, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in 2004, and obtaining a Master of Philosophy (2006) and Doctor of Philosophy (2007) in International Relations from Oxford University. His professional career in national security began at the U.S. State Department, where he served in Iraq and Afghanistan, including as a civilian advisor during the Obama administration and advising General David Petraeus when he commanded American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Elected to the House in 2018 after defeating Republican incumbent Tom MacArthur, Kim focused on issues like healthcare, education, veterans' affairs, and foreign policy. In 2024, amid federal corruption and bribery charges against incumbent Senator Bob Menendez, Kim won the Democratic primary and was elected to the Senate, positioning himself as a candidate to restore integrity to the chamber.
