About
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known by his initials AMLO, was born on November 13, 1953, in the rural community of Tepetitán, Tabasco, Mexico, into a provincial middle-class family of shopkeepers. He pursued higher education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), studying political science and public administration from 1972 to 1976. Early in his career, he joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), marking the start of his rise in Mexican politics, before shifting toward left-wing opposition movements. López Obrador served as Head of Government of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005. He ran for the presidency three times, losing narrowly in 2006 and 2012 amid controversies, before securing victory in 2018 as the candidate of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena). As Mexico's 65th president from 2018 to 2024, he implemented policies focused on austerity, anti-corruption, social welfare programs, and challenging neoliberal economics. A prolific writer and political scientist, he has authored several books on Mexican history and politics. Post-presidency, he remains an influential figure in Mexican politics.
