About
American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) is a U.S.-based national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 2006. Its primary mission is to educate the American public about Palestine and its people, and to advocate for justice and human rights for Palestinians. AMP organizes annual conferences, educational events, and grassroots campaigns, and engages in media outreach to promote its perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. AMP is frequently accused by various groups, including counter-jihad activists, pro-Israel organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Middle East Forum, of having ties to extremist organizations and promoting anti-Semitic views. Critics allege that AMP functions as a successor organization to the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), which was found liable in a civil lawsuit for materially supporting Hamas. These allegations often point to the involvement of individuals previously associated with IAP in AMP's leadership. In a notable legal case, Wultz v. Islamic Association of Palestine, AMP was initially named as a defendant. In 2017, a federal court in Illinois found AMP liable for contempt of court for failing to produce documents relevant to the lawsuit. The lawsuit sought to hold AMP responsible as a successor-in-interest to IAP for judgments against IAP related to Hamas attacks. However, in 2019, the court dismissed AMP from the lawsuit, ruling that the plaintiffs had not sufficiently proven that AMP was a 'successor-in-interest' to IAP, though the contempt finding for document production remained. Despite the dismissal from successor liability, the allegations of ties to IAP and Hamas continue to be widely reported and are a central point of criticism against AMP.
