About
Algenon Lamont Marbley was born on September 19, 1954, in Morehead City, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976, where he also served as former President of the Black Student Movement, and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law. Before ascending to the federal bench, Marbley worked for 11 years as a partner at the law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, where he practiced civil, criminal, and administrative law. Appointed as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, Marbley has had a distinguished judicial career marked by mentorship of clerks, as evidenced by his chambers featuring photos and stories of their achievements. He has remained deeply involved in legal education and community service, including selection as the Howard J. Trienens Visiting Judicial Scholar at Northwestern University School of Law. Marbley served on the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University and received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Capital University Law School in 2000 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2022.
