About
The Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan, known as the Doha Agreement, was signed between the United States and the Taliban on February 29, 2020, in Doha, Qatar. It aimed to end the 18-year war in Afghanistan by committing the US to a full troop withdrawal by May 2021 in exchange for Taliban guarantees against al-Qaeda and other terrorists using Afghan soil, implementation of a ceasefire, and direct peace negotiations between the Taliban and Afghan government representatives, including prisoner releases. The agreement paved the way for intra-Afghan talks starting September 12, 2020, but faced criticism for sidelining the Afghan government during US-Taliban negotiations, Taliban violations of reduction-in-violence pledges, continued safe havens for militants, and ultimately contributing to the Afghan government's collapse and Taliban resurgence in August 2021 following an accelerated US withdrawal under President Biden.
