About
Abdul Hadi Chalabi was a wealthy Iraqi Shia businessman and politician, patriarch of one of Iraq's elite banking families, and recognized as one of the wealthiest men in the country prior to the 1958 revolution. He served as president of the Iraqi Senate under King Faisal II, holding significant political influence during the Hashemite monarchy, with his family's banking interests forming the backbone of their fortune and positioning them as key economic players in pre-revolutionary Iraq. Following the July 1958 military coup led by Abdul Karim Qasim, which overthrew the monarchy and declared a republic, the Chalabi family was forced into exile in Britain. This upheaval ended Abdul Hadi's political career and scattered the family, with his son Ahmad Chalabi later emerging as a major figure in Iraqi opposition politics. Little is publicly documented about his life in exile or exact date of death, but his legacy endured through the family's enduring wealth and influence.
